Italy is awash with rare, one-of-a-kind grape varieties, many of them with only a handful of vineyard hectares left in existence, and Verdeca is one of these (relative) rarities. This bottling by San Marzano is a wonderful example of its potential, boasting a huge spectrum of textures and flavours, from an aromatic floral note to the bouquet to fresh green apple on the palate and a hint of beeswax. There's a subtle creaminess to the mouthfeel, finishing on a refreshing fennel-like herbal note. This typifies the white wines of Italy perfectly, and is a must-try for the adventurous wine drinker.

A cool fermentation was initiated in French oak barrels, followed by regular battonage to promote texture and roundness to the mid-palate. Barrel ageing took place for a total of three months. No animal-based fining agents or winery aids were used during the vinification.

San Marzano is an award-winning cooperative of over 1000 vinegrowers in southern Italy, melding time-honoured techniques with innovative and vegan friendly winemaking. They were granted the prestigious title of 'European Producer of the Year' by the Sommelier Wine Awards, 2017.
