San Marzano Il Pumo Primitivo

Vintage: 2016

Grape variety: 100% Primitivo

From: Apulia, Italy

ABV: 13.5%

Our customers familiar with the big and bold red wines of southern California may know Primitivo by another, and perhaps more famous name - Zinfandel. The Italian heartland of this grape is in Puglia, where the long hot ripening season results in wines with great character and vibrancy. This Primitivo from San Marzano is typical of the style, with an intense bouquet of plums, cherries and raspberries, and a full-bodied yet juicy palate profile leading to a delightfully savoury finish. Try it with the heartier flavours of Mediterranean cuisine - think grilled zucchini and aubergine kebabs, or a sun-dried tomato vegan pizza.

The grapes were fermented in stainless steel to preserve the vibrant fruit flavours. No animal-based fining agents or winery aids were used during the vinification.

San Marzano is an award-winning cooperative of over 1000 vinegrowers in southern Italy, melding time-honoured techniques with innovative and vegan friendly winemaking. They were granted the prestigious title of 'European Producer of the Year' by the Sommelier Wine Awards, 2017.
