Oveja Negra Winemaker's Selection Chardonnay Viognier

Via's definition of Black Sheep is someone special and out of the ordinary, someone who attracts attention, who captivates, and has character and personality. Step forward: Oveja Negra! Via's first harvest was as recent as 2002 from a new winery at Talca and this is very definitely a "Can Do" operation producing wines with attitude. Winemaker Edgard Carter seeks to combine sustainable viticultural practices with innovative winemaking, to produce fruit-driven wines of real character. "Sustainability, expression of terroir, and quality are key. The aim is to deliver wines with superior quality, at fair prices, made in harmony with nature". Individual wines for individual people.

Grapes are handpicked and brought to the winery for whole cluster pressing. This technique minimises extraction of the skin phenolics which produces a more elegant, delicate wine. Fermented in stainless steel tanks for 25 days at 13C-15C. 10% of the juice is fermented with wild yeasts for 45 days, to add complexity. After fermentation, 50% of the wine is kept on its lies in tank to add texture and creaminess to the final blend. The remaining 50% is aged on its lees in french oak barrels for 7 months. After earth filtration and sterile cartridge filtration of 0,45 microns the wine is blended and bottled.

The grapes used to make this wine come from the Cuncos and Rio Bonito blocks of their San Rafael estate in the Maule Valley. The area here benefits from long warm days that promote ripening with cool nights that preserve good acidity. Their proximity to the Andes also has a cooling effect on the vines. Canopy management in the vineyard controls yields and ensures even ripening.

Tasting Note
Medium bodied on the palate with a creamy Chardonnay texture enhanced by the peachy and lifted characters of Viognier through to a crisp, refreshing finish.
