The Olifantsberg Silhouette is the ultimate homage to Chateauneuf du Pape. This is a truly delicious red wine made with the classic grape varieties of the Rhône. It can be drunk on it's own but is probably best paired with red meats or rich dishes. Leave the bottle open or even better decant it to see the full expression of this remarkable red wine.

Olifantsberg strive to make wines that reflect their unique location by focussing on hands-on viticulture that yields grapes that demands as little as possible intervention in the cellar. The estate vineyards are mostly dedicated to varieties that they believe can truly thrive under the very harsh conditions they experience. Their unique schist soils, constant winds and elevation combines to produce concentrated fruit that produces elegant, fresh and age-worthy wines.


The vineyards are located on the fertile slopes of the Brandwacht Mountain Range where they endure big diurnal temperature differences and strong winds, at altitudes from 250m to 450 metres above sea level. During the winter the mountain peaks are snow covered, keeping the vines dormant for longer. Cold winters, coupled with the summer winds, ensures the slow ripening of the grapes, helps to maintain healthy vines and contributes freshness and elegance to the wines. The soils in the vineyard comprise a unique schist and slate, which lends structure to the final wine. The vines are mostly bush vines or "sur echalas", which are appropriate for drought resistence and trellised to provide maximise complexity from the fertile soils. The vines are supported by a vertical wooden pole- a total of 65,000 of these wooden poles were planted to establish this system, across the 12 hectares that are planted "sur echalas". Planted at one metre apart, the vines are farmed in a sustainable manner.


This handcrafted wine is based on Syrah, with small additions of bush vine Grenache, Carignan and Mourvèdre. Natural fermentation took place in open-top fermenters, followed by maturation in French oak foudres and barrels for a further 10 months.
