Ernst Gouws & Co. Pinot Noir

Vintage: 2016

Grape variety: 100% Pinot Noir

From: Western Cape, South Africa

ABV: 14%

South African Pinot Noir has had a mixed history, with quality-focused and driven pioneers like Hamilton Russell having to face down a tide of over-ripe, over-extracted, almost rubbery Pinot Noirs from lesser producers. Things have improved a hundredfold in recent years however, with a new focus on vineyard site, early picking and new winemaking techniques (such as semi-carbonic maceration) increasingly deployed. This example from Ernst Gouws & Co. is characteristically well-made, with juicy strawberry and redcurrant fruit underscored by a wild, almost brambly character, lending the wine a complexity and tannic moreishness not often found amongst warm-climate Pinot Noirs. This is great quality at a great price, and a fantastic introduction to new wave South African Pinot.

After fermentation, the wine was matured in a selection of new and second-fill French oak barrels for a period of 18 months. No animal-based fining agents or winery aids were used during the vinification.

Ernst Gouw & Co are a family owned winery passionate about the many terroirs of South Africa. They are committed to sustainable winemaking in a European style, utilising modern and inclusive vegan-friendly oenological techniques.
