Ernst Gouws and Co. Pinotage

Vintage: 2016

Grape variety: 100% Pinotage

From: Western Cape, South Africa

ABV: 14%

Pinotage has gotten a bad rap in recent years, particularly amongst the new wave of sommeliers and wine professionals who decry its robust and ripe flavour profile. Subtle it is not, but tasteful it is, and this Pinotage from Ernst Gouws & Co. is a fine example of what good Pinotage can be when made by a skilled and practiced hand. In the mouth, it's all stewed fruit, dark chocolate, rich spice and coffee, with silky, well-integrated tannins from tactical oak maturation and none of the burnt, rubbery character that poor bottles can sometimes show. Drink it with hearty food, a Tuscan bean stew or an autumnal butternut squash or pumpkin casserole.

Following fermentation, the wine was matured in second-fill French oak barrels for a period of 9 months. No animal-based fining agents or winery aids were used during the vinification.

Ernst Gouw & Co are a family owned winery passionate about the many terroirs of South Africa. They are committed to sustainable winemaking in a European style, utilising modern and inclusive vegan-friendly oenological techniques.
