Domaine des Pourthie Chardonnay

Vintage: 2016

Grape variety: 100% Chardonnay

From: Languedoc-Roussillon, France

ABV: 13%

It may surprise some to discover that the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France can produce some cracking Chardonnay, despite the searing summer heat and aridity, and is increasingly doing so. Limoux of course, has been the home of Southern French Chardonnay for some years, but this offering from Domaine des Pourthie (situated near Agde) is made in much the same vein. On the nose the wine shows classic buttery character, with accompanying notes of lemon and peach leading onto a distinctly creamy palate. Textural, full, yet still refreshing, this is extremely good-value Chardonnay. Drink only briefly chilled with a light summer quiche, or with a selection of fine cheeses.

In the winery, the juice was macerated briefly on the grape skins to extract maximum flavour, and then fermented cool with no following malolactic fermentation (to retain the fresh acidity). It was then aged on lees to lend the palate a buttery, creamy quality. No animal-based fining agents or winery aids were used during the vinification.
