Portugal has long resisted the planting of the so-called 'international varieties' (think Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay etc.) and as such the country has a wealth of old, unique and exciting vine varieties. Castelao is widely regarded as being one of the more premium examples, and the Cintila Red by Santo Isidro de Pegoes punches well above its price tag. The fruit has a real fresh purity to it, undiluted by oak, and bright flavours of raspberry, redcurrant and plums dominate the palate, lifted on the nose by a floral violent hint. Perfect with casual weeknight food, perhaps a halloumi burger or a spicy burrito.

In the winery, the grapes were fermented cool to retain the natural fruit flavours. No animal-based fining agents or winery aids were used during the vinification.

The Cooperativa Santo Isidro de Pegoes is one of the most respected producers in Portugal, crafting modern, vegan-friendly wines from indigenous Portuguese grape varieties.
