Winemakers Reserve The Black Shiraz Berton Vineyards
Winemakers Reserve The Black Shiraz from Berton Vineyards
First, there was 'The Black Shiraz' (a stunning wine in its own right) and then came the Winemakers Reserve. This is the latest wine by Berton Vineyard owner, Bob Berton, with grapes sourced from specific vineyards in the Padthaway sub-region of South Australia. In style, its very much in the ilk of 'The Black Shiraz' - big, bold and juicy, but the Reserve is a wine with a little more finesse, exhibiting refined, toasty notes from a longer period in French oak, less boisterous tannins and an extended finish. The different vineyard parcels were vinified separately in a bid to maximize site expression and then blended carefully prior to bottling to produce a wine that is very much more than the sum of its parts. No animal-based fining agents or winery aids were used during the vinification.
This is an inky, opulent wine, and one of the finest in its class. Drink with something rich and fragrant, perhaps a butternut squash and rosemary stew?
Berton Vineyards is a modern, forward-looking producer, embracing the technology and possibilities of vegan winemaking.
The 2015 vintage was awarded 4/5 stars by James Halliday.
