Berton Vineyard The Black Shiraz

The Black Shiraz is a wine that has made something of a name for itself. The Berton Vineyard range is a proud exhibitor of many of the qualities wine lovers have come to expect from bold, Australian wines, but 'The Black Shiraz' is perhaps the true embodiment of this style. The fruit is sourced from old vines on sandy soils with good drainage and poor nutrient retention, concentrating the ripe fruit character in the berries.

Once in the winery, the grapes were fermented at high temperatures to extract maximum colour and flavour compounds, and then racked into French oak for a period of barrel ageing. No animal-based fining agents or winery aids were used during the vinification.

Once-upon-a-time, 'The Black Shiraz' was known as something of an 'espresso wine' - heady, too rich, and a little over the top. That was the early days however, and now the wine is made in a more restrained style, whilst still retaining the bold flavours it has become renowned for. On the palate, juicy black fruit character shows through despite the high alcohol, combined with a peppery spiciness and a toasty mocha note on the finish.  Try it with a hot vegan chilli dish, or with the rich, spicy flavours of Persian and North African cuisine.

Berton Vineyard is a modern, forward-looking producer, embracing the technology and possibilities of vegan winemaking.
